The [Blacks in the Media Working Group][1] is a consortium of scholars and activists from
Cornell
University and the
Ithaca, NY community dedicated to addressing the representation of Afro-diasporic peoples in the public sphere as it relates to the goal of social justice. This group emerged in the spring of 2007 in response to a series of media events which brought to light the persistence of racism and sexism in the public consciousness, the mass media’s complicity in this phenomenon, as well as the new and particular questions about representation facing the black community. As a response to the dominant culture’s apparent silencing of a nuanced, representative critical voice from the perspective of black people, and especially black women, in the publicized debate over these issues, the [Blacks in the Media Working Group] has emerged as a think tank dedicated to coordinated efforts to make our perspectives known. Since the group is comprised of members who possess specialized and advanced knowledge about the issues at hand, we feel that as a group we can address the historical, cultural, and theoretical nuances of the public debates that reference us with a level of accuracy and sophistication that the dominant channels of the infotainment telesector currently lack.
